The Dayton Daily News for February 14th announced that the National Federation of State High School Associations voted this past Friday to formally ban the usage of the highly controversial A-11 offense, closing the “scrimmage kick” loophole upon which the offense was based and deeming the scheme “unsportsmanlike” due to the fact that it was “equally chaotic” to officials.

SI.com quotes Mike Webb, supervisor of football officials for the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission, as saying, “It was unethical for [programs using the A-11] to use a loophole in the rules to run this offense.”

A11Offense.com contains a post in response to the NFHS’s decision which states that the A-11 “is here to stay” and that there are “too many demonstrated benefits for the teams wanting to use it” to prevent it from being outlawed permanently.  “Moving forward in the 2009 season and beyond,” the posting continues, “several options are under review for any team in America wanting to ‘retain the right’ to use the A-11 Offense if they believe it will help their team, their league and / or the entire section compete in a more equitable fashion based on their circumstances.”

NATS will continue to inform our readers on updates related to this subject as they become available.
