Combine Drills: Speed

40 YARD DASH

College Coach Comments:

"More so than ever, the sport of football is controlled by speed. Offenses are built to stretch the field vertically, and defenses are built to stop high octane offenses. Because speed is such an important weapon, a coach’s evaluation of a player often begins with a player’s 40 yard dash time. To run a great 40, a player must possess the short burst acceleration needed to cover the first 20 yards, and the top speed maintenance to hold their momentum through the final 20 yards."

Procedures:

  1. Athlete begins in a 3 point stance.
  2. Athlete is instructed "You may go."
  3. Athlete holds for at least a 2 count before starting.
  4. Each athlete runs the 40 yard dash twice.
  5. Three times are recorded for each run. The two fastest times (within 1/10 sec.) for each run will be used to determine the best overall time for NATS scoring purposes.
