Combine Drills: Agility

SHORT SHUTTLE

College Coach Comments:

"When a coach is looking for defensive players, he tends to look for athletes with great lateral speed. This skill is of supreme importance because it is what allows a defensive player to keep himself between the offensive player and the goal line. The Short Shuttle tests an athlete’s ability to move laterally and his ability to quickly and efficiently change direction in the lateral plane."

Procedures:

  1. Athlete begins in a 3 point stance, facing timer, with hand on start line and one foot on each side of the start line.
  2. Athlete starts after being instructed "You may go."
  3. Each athlete performs the short shuttle run twice, once to the right and once to the left.
  4. Short Shuttle - Right:
    • Athlete begins in a 3 point stance with left hand on start line.
    • Run directly to the right 5 yards and touch line with right hand.
    • Reverse direction and run directly to the left for 10 yards and touch line with left hand.
    • Reverse direction again and run 5 yards through the start/finish line.
  5. Short Shuttle - Left:
    • Athlete begins in a 3 point stance with right hand on start line.
    • Run directly to the left 5 yards and touch line with left hand.
    • Reverse direction and run directly to the right for 10 yards and touch line with right hand.
    • Reverse direction again and run 5 yards through the start/finish line.
  6. Two times for each run are recorded and the fastest overall time is used for NATS scoring purposes.

3-CONE DRILL

College Coach Comments:

"Most every football player has competed against a brilliant track athlete who was absolutely terrible at football. The reason this tends to happen is because track athletes aren’t used to changing direction when they sprint. A football player with a blistering 40 Yard Dash time is as useless as a car with no steering wheel if he can’t change direction. The 3-Cone Drill tests an athlete’s ability to combine short burst acceleration with change of direction skills."

Procedures:

  1. Athlete begins in 3 point stance with hand on start/finish line.
  2. Run forward 5 yards and touch top line with right hand.
  3. Turn back and touch start/finish line with right hand.
  4. Turn back again and run around top of second cone. (This is a larger 18" cone.)
  5. Weave underneath and around third cone. (This is a larger 18" cone.)
  6. Run around outside of second cone back through start/finish line.
  7. Each athlete performs the 3-Cone Drill twice.
  8. Two times for each run are recorded and the fastest overall time is used for NATS scoring purposes.
